The album is a pop and R&B record containing elements of funk, hip hop and soul. It was written by Doja Cat alongside other songwriters and producers, with production from Yeti Beats and Dr. Luke (under the pseudonym Tyson Trax). Guest vocals are contributed by Smino, Gucci Mane, and Tyga.

In May 2020, Hot Pink peaked at number nine on the US Billboard 200, becoming Doja Cat's first top 10 entry on the chart. It has been certified gold in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It also peaked in the top 40 of 12 other countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden and Norway. It was nominated for Favorite Soul/R&B Album at the 2020 American Music Awards and Top R&B Album at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.
